FBI Alleges Ex-Intel Employee Stole

A former engineer at the Hudson facility of chip maker Intel Corp. has been charged with stealing trade secrets after taking a new job at rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

In a criminal complaint unsealed Tuesday, the FBI alleged that Biswahoman Pani of Worcester copied a host of confidential Intel documents, including 13 "top secret" company files containing highly sensitive design plans for future processor chips. In the complaint, filed in late August in US District Court in Boston, FBI Special Agent Timothy Russell of the bureau's Boston computer crime squad said in an affidavit that more than 100 pages of sensitive Intel documents, as well as 19 computer-aided-design drawings, were found in a search of Pani's house conducted on July 1.

According to the affidavit, Pani told his supervisor in May that he was unhappy because he missed his wife, Vandana Padhi, who worked at an Intel facility in California. On May 29, Intel agreed to transfer Padhi to the Hudson plant. But a few hours later, Pani handed in his resignation, saying he was interested in taking a job with a hedge fund. Pani said he would leave the company on June 11, and would be on vacation until that date, but that his wife would continue to work at Intel.

However, Russell said, unbeknownst to Intel officials, Pani had been discussing a possible job at AMD for several months. He began working for AMD on June 2, eight days before his employment at Intel ended. Pani still had access to his Intel laptop and the company's computer network. Russell said Pani used this access to collect sensitive documents that might have provided valuable competitive intelligence for his new employer.

The FBI was called in after an Intel employee learned about 8Pani's job with AMD and ordered a check of the computer system to see if Pani had accessed confidential documents.

"Intellectual property is a critical asset for Intel," said company spokeswoman Claudine Mangano. "We basically asked the Department of Justice and the FBI to investigate activities, and we are cooperating with that investigation."

MTNL will launch 3G service on test

State owned telecom operator, MTNL, will launch the first ever 3rd Generation (3G) mobile services in the country on test basis in Delhi by the end of the current month. The trial network will be in and around the Capital’s Connaught Place area. Indoor trial of 3G in Delhi has already been completed. The launch will give people a feel of high speed data, video streaming etc. which come as part of the 3G services. MTNL has already got ready the core equipment for the purpose. It is presently mobilizing the necessary radio equipment. The Company will formally launch the 3G services in Delhi by the end of this year. In Mumbai, the services will be available early next year.

MTNL is rolling out the 3G service making use of the necessary Spectrum allocated to it by Department of Telecommunications. DOT recently allocated one block of spectrum each to MTNL in Delhi and Mumbai and to BSNL in other service areas. This has been done ahead of the forthcoming auction of 3G spectrum for each telecom service area. DoT has already initiated the process for selection of the specialised agency for conduct of the e-auction. MTNL and BSNL will pay a price for the spectrum allocated to them equal to the highest bid in the respective service area.

Our ears perked up last week when we saw Capcom had filed the title Mega Man 9 with Australia's Classification Review Board (down under's version of the Entertainment Software Ratings Board). It's been over ten years since we were blessed with a proper new Mega Man game. Now it looks like the next entry in the series is set for Nintendo's WiiWare service.

The art is going to be 8-bit, which is a tad bit disappointing, but I've been missing on the good 2D scrolling action for a while now. For those of you guys who want some good somewhat-recent Megaman scroll-action, check out Megaman Network Transmission for the GC. Even though it's based on the EXE series, this feels real true to me.

Like the graphics, the story takes a decidedly simplistic yet classic approach. Robots are causing havoc, and Dr. Wily blames Dr. Light for the wreckage. Mega Man sets out to clear his creator's name while blowing up many, many things. And speaking of bosses, the article also gives us a look at the new roster: Magma Man, Galaxy Man, Jewel Man, Concrete Man, Hornet Man, Plug Man, Tornado Man, and Splash Woman. Yes, that says "woman"; after all, it's 2008 and the series needed more fodder for robot-on-robot fanfic.

Apple 3G iPhone hits 50,000 sales per week

The Apple 3G iPhone is maintaining consumer interest two months after it was launched, now racking up an estimated 27,000 sales per week, after a high of 50,000 per week in its first two weeks on sale, Mobile understands.

The Apple device is believed to be maintaining 27,000 sales per week through a sustained advertising campaign across TV, billboards and print.

It is believed to be hovering between a 4% and 6% share of the handset market, and even reaching ‘high single digits’ some weeks, according to a source close to the matter.

Despite the encouraging sales, O2 and Apple are keen to sustain the levels in the run-up to Christmas, with prepay taking the baton from contract.

Sales were hampered following the 11 July launch amid registration problems and stock shortages at both Apple and O2 which frustrated customers eager to get hold of the 3G device when it was first launched.

First-week sales of the Apple 3G iPhone racked up around 50,000 units despite the systems faults, but those levels dropped to 32,000 after the first month.

O2 has put aside a major chunk of its acquisition budget to the 3G iPhone to demonstrate to Apple that it should keep the exclusivity for future Apple devices.

O2 unveiled the £350 price tag for the 8GB version, and £400 for 16GB last week.

Although YTFakeCreator, found on forums pirates, is not capable of spreading automatically pages it creates, it can very easily generate a page inviting its victims to install a component to play the video. Instead of a legitimate component is of course a virus or spyware that installs on your Internet imprudent.

Google Chrome has Microsoft's code inside

A great post over at Scott Hanselman's blog goes into some detail of the Microsoft code Google has included in Chrome. It's all street-legal: the code was made available under a very permissive open source licence back in 2004, and may be the first of Microsoft's steps in that direction.

Hanselman is a senior program manager at MS, and clearly enthusiastic about the whole business. He also writes a mean blog--if you've got any curiosity about some of the gnarly bits inside Chrome, including how it works securely with multiple versions of Windows, then give this the once-over.

Even more interesting than Chrome's internals is this statement:

Yahoo opens its third service providers

After signing an advertising partnership with Google, Yahoo opened its pages and its service providers third of the internet and software. The contents of the kiosk from Apple iTunes and Amazon.com merchant will be offered through Yahoo Music, third-party applications to be provided on Yahoo Mail. In addition, the homepage of the portal will be redesigned to facilitate access to such Internet content, said the firm led by Jerry Yang at a press briefing held Thursday on his land, California.

Tata to start GSM service in Mumbai

After Reliance now Tata enters in the GSM service. Teleservices (Maharashtra) and three new operators—Videocon’s Datacom Solutions, Unitech Wireless and Swan Telecom—have received GSM spectrum for offering services in Mumbai.

This will heat up competition in the circle, which has the highest average revenue per user per month (ARPU) in the country. Already seven operators are present in the heavily-penetrated market, with Idea Cellular launching operations just last month.

The four operators have been allotted 4.4Mhz spectrum each in the 1800 Mhz band. It is currently termed as “trial spectrum” and operators are expected to complete trials within a given timeframe.

Of them, TTML is expected to take the least time in rolling out services because it will utilise existing CDMA infrastructure. It’s capex will also be incremental because GSM antennae can be mounted on towers being used for offering CDMA services. TTML provides CDMA mobile and fixedline services under the Indicom brand.

“TTML has been allocated trial GSM spectrum and we are required to complete the trials within the next three months.

This spectrum allocation, if confirmed, after the trials, will significantly enhance TTML’s bouquet of wireless offerings and further strengthen TTML’s competitive position in the market,” a company spokesperson told.

Mumbai, with nearly 15 million subscribers, is the highest-revenue generating market. According to telecom regulator Trai, the blended average revenue per month per user (pre-paid & post-paid) is the highest in Mumbai at Rs 274. The post-paid ARPU is as high as Rs 630. However, wireless penetration in the financial capital is as high as 70%, signalling tough competition for new players.

Hackers hit LHC computer system

Hackers have mounted an attack on the Large Hadron Collider, raising concerns about the security of the biggest experiment in the world as it passes an important new milestone.

Now it has emerged that, as the first particles were circulating in the machine near Geneva, a Greek group had hacked into the facility and displayed a page with the headline "GST: Greek Security Team."

The people responsible signed off: "We are 2600 - dont mess with us. (sic)"

The website - cmsmon.cern.ch - can no longer be accessed by the public as a result of the attack.

Scientists working at Cern, the organisation that runs the vast smasher, were worried about what the hackers could do because they were "one step away" from the computer control system of one of the huge detectors of the machine, a vast magnet that weighs 12,500 tons, measuring around 21 metres in length and 15 metres wide/high.

If they had hacked into a second computer network, they could have turned off parts of the vast detector and, said the insider, "it is hard enough to make these things work if no one is messing with it."

Fortunately, only one file was damaged but one of the scientists firing off emails as the CMS team fought off the hackers said it was a "scary experience".

iPhone App Downloads to Hit 1 Billion Mark

There may only be over 12 million iPhones in the wild, but that hasn’t stopped iTunes users from downloading more than twice as many apps as songs during the store’s first two months of availability, according to a report.

Everyone was impressed last month when Apple announced moving 30 million downloads through the new iPhone Apps Store, bringing in $30 million of revenue (or a million dollars per day). Well, growth more than doubled this month, bringing a total of 100 million downloads (and somewhere around another $70 million of software revenue). This has some interesting implications.

1 billion downloaded apps could happen much sooner than the middle of next year. As apps become a key selling point for Apple going forward and more iPhones and iPods get out into the wild, more users will find reason to download apps and in turn, increase the download rate.

The ecosystem that Microsoft (MSFT) has built up around its Windows operating system is showing signs of strain. In one of several recent moves by partners that sell or support the company's software, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), the world's No. 1 PC maker, has quietly assembled a group of engineers to develop software that will let customers bypass certain features of Vista, the latest version of Windows. Employees on a separate skunk works team are even angling to replace Windows with an HP-assembled operating system, say three sources close to the company.

HP acknowledges the first effort. The company formed the "customer experience" group nine months ago and put at its helm Susie Wee, a former director in the company's research labs. Her team is developing touchscreen technology and other software that allows users to circumvent Microsoft's operating system to watch movies or view photos more easily than they can with Vista. "Our customers are looking for insanely simple technology where they don't have to fight with the technology to get the task done," says Phil McKinney, chief technology officer in HP's PC division. After Vista was introduced last year, it drew criticism for slowing down computers and not working smoothly for certain tasks.

McKinney says any discussions about building an operating system to rival Windows are happening below senior-management levels. He doesn't deny some employees may have had such conversations, but he says HP isn't devoting substantial resources to such projects. "Is HP funding a huge R&D team to go off and create an operating system? [That] makes no sense," he says. "For us it's about innovating on top of Vista."

BSNL to share network with private telecom

State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) Monday said it has decided to share its network with private telecom companies for roaming agreements.

The company will sign the first roaming agreement with new telecom operator Swan Telecom, a BSNL internal circular of the management committee meeting said.

This facility will enable subscribers to enjoy seamless connectivity throughout the country.

'The memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this regard may be signed with the seeking operators initially for six months only on non-exclusive and experimental basis,' the circular said.

The circular also added that the company would revise the initial charge of 52 paise a minute for every outgoing call after six months, and the incremental additional cost of the upgrade of equipment to provide roaming facilities will be borne by the private operators.

It further added that the idle capacity of the network would be used to earn extra revenue.

Bangalore designs Intel's first quad-core

Intel released its first "true" quad-core processors on Monday with the introduction of its Xeon 7400 series of server chips, formerly called Dunnington. Designed by Intel engineers in Bangalore, India, the chip lineup includes the company's first quad-core and six-core chips produced on a single piece of silicon.

The Bangalore design center is the first Intel team outside the US to complete the design of a 45-nanometer processor.

Post its inception in 2001, the Xeon 7400 series is the first chip to come out of Intel's Bangalore design center. The center had previously worked on another Xeon server chip called Whitefield.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment," said Praveen Vishakantaiah, the chief architect of Dunnington, discussing the server chip in a phone interview. "No other team has been able to accomplish something like this so fast."

Moreover, the Bangalore design center is the first Intel team outside the U.S. to complete the design of a 45-nanometer processor, he said.

The Dunnington chip design marks a technical milestone for Intel, as it uses a monolithic die, the term engineers use to describe putting all of the cores on a single piece of silicon.

Intel's existing quad-core processor lines use two pieces of silicon, each with two cores, packaged together. That approach made the older quad-core chips easier to produce and avoided the manufacturing difficulties that hampered the release of AMD's Barcelona chip, an x86 server chip with four cores on a single piece of silicon. Those difficulties were compounded by AMD's transition to a new 65-nanometer manufacturing process.

The small cell phone carrier Cricket, are helping lower-income households on line with a cheaper wireless high-speed internet for the masses. Using the Crickets EVDO Rev A network and a little USB modem that’s links you Windows PC, they are going to call the service “$1.33/day.”

Jeff Toig, Vice president of Cricket says, “There is nobody in the market providing wireless broadband to a low-income customer with no contract” he continued saying “These are people under $50k household income, with no broadband Internet in their homes. This becomes their alternative to DSL or cable.”

As part of the BT HP Alliance, BT (British Telecommunications) has signed a $660 million contract amendment with HP to extend the transformation of its technology environment, reinforcing BT’s ability to meet customer needs today and into the future, while delivering significant cost reductions.

The contract extends the companies’ current agreement for the next 7.5 years, whereby HP will continue to provide, deploy and support BT’s servers and storage. Under the agreement, HP also will continue to deliver Service Desk and End User Services to a population in excess of 100,000 users across BT in the United Kingdom.

The deal signature demonstrates the ongoing commitment in the strategic relationship between the two companies via the BT HP Alliance, which has created more than $5.3 billion of new revenue for BT and HP since 2004. BT and HP are building the networked IT infrastructure that delivers new customer business models.

Now, well before any consensus on the technology's readiness, India has become the first country to convict someone of a crime relying on evidence from this controversial machine: a brain scanner that produces images of the human mind in action and is said to reveal signs that a suspect remembers details of the crime in question.

For years, scientists have peered into the brain and sought to identify deception. They have shot infrared beams through liars' heads, placed them in giant magnetic resonance imaging machines and used scanners to track their eyeballs. Since the Sept. 11 attacks, the United States has plowed money into brain-based lie detection in the hope of producing more fruitful counterterrorism investigations.

The technologies, generally regarded as promising but unproved, have yet to be widely accepted as evidence — except in India, where in recent years judges have begun to admit brain scans. But it was only in June, in a murder case in Pune, in Maharashtra State, that a judge explicitly cited a scan as proof that the suspect's brain held "experiential knowledge" about the crime that only the killer could possess, sentencing her to life in prison.

Psychologists and neuroscientists in the United States, which has been at the forefront of brain-based lie detection, variously called India's application of the technology to legal cases "fascinating," "ridiculous," "chilling" and "unconscionable." (While attempts have been made in the United States to introduce findings of similar tests into court cases, these generally have been by defense lawyers trying to show the mental impairment of the accused, not by prosecutors trying to convict.)

Notwithstanding the controversy surrounding BlackBerry, hailed for its push mail services, Reliance Communications (RCom) is close to launching pre-paid BlackBerry services in the country.

Meanwhile, the another private CDMA service provider, Tata Teleservices (TTSL), is gearing up to launch the services by the end of the year.

"RCom has already tested the viability of launching pre-paid BlackBerry services on its network on all the six models available in the country," sources close to the development told Business Standard.

At present, BlackBerry services are only available in the post-paid mode, and with the proposed launch, pre-paid services will help subscribers keep the usage under check.

When contacted, a Reliance Communications spokesperson confirmed the move, but declined to provide the date of the launch.

At present, four service providers—Bharati Airtel, Vodafone-Essar, BPL Mobile and RCom—provide BlackBerry services in the country. BPL Mobile has recently launched 'BlackBerry Connect', a service that provides BlackBerry services without the need of a BlackBerry handset, in the country.

BlackBerry is a product of Canadian firm Research In Motion (RIM) and offers a patented service that provides wireless e-mails over mobile phones. The e-mails are pushed on to the handsets the moment they are received at the server, eliminating the need to connect to the web.

I've not had a long time with Windows 7 beta 1 (given the holidays) but I've played with it long enough to form a few opinions:

There are no new features in this build. If Microsoft has any new stuff lined up for the RTM then we're going to have to wait to find out. Features-wise, build 6.1.7000.0.081212-1400 is similar to earlier builds I've looked at .
This beta is of excellent quality. This is the kind of code that you could roll out and live with. Even the pre-betas were solid, but finally this beta feels like it's "done." This beta exceeds the quality of any other Microsoft OS beta that I've handled.
Performance of this beta is exceptional. I've not had a chance to benchmark it yet but it feels snappier and more responsive than earlier betas I've handled.
Judging by the quality of this build, I expect Windows 7 to be released June/July of '09. I really can't see Microsoft dragging out the release a year.

Three leading technology companies today announced a collaboration aimed at transforming global educational assessment and improving learning outcomes. At the Learning and Technology World Forum in London, Cisco Systems Inc., Intel Corporation and Microsoft Corp. unveiled plans to underwrite a multi-sector research project to develop new assessment approaches, methods and technologies for measuring the success of 21st-century teaching and learning in classrooms around the world. The three companies also announced the appointment of Barry McGaw, currently the director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, as executive director of the project. Cuba develops own free Linux called 'Nova'

Cuba launched its own variant of the Linux computer operating system
this week in the latest front of the communist island's battle against
what it views as U.S. hegemony.

The Cuban variant, called Nova, was introduced at a Havana computer
conference on "technological sovereignty" and is central to the Cuban
government's desire to replace the Microsoft software running most of
the island's computers.

The government views the use of Microsoft systems, developed by
U.S.-based Microsoft Corp, as a potential threat because it says U.S.
security agencies have access to Microsoft codes.

Also, the long-standing U.S. trade embargo against the island makes it
difficult for Cubans to get Microsoft software legally and to update
it.

"Getting greater control over the informatic process is an important

licensing deal with Sony Music Entertainment which allows it to
continue showing music videos of artists like Beyonce and Avril
Lavrigne, people familiar with the talks said on Thursday.

The deal with Sony, the world's second largest music company, is
important in light of a decision by Warner Music Group to walk away
from similar contract renewal talks with YouTube last December in a
dispute over licensing fees.

Warner asked YouTube to take its music videos down.

A person familiar with Sony Music's plans said the company still sees
great value in YouTube's huge numbers of users both to Sony's artists
and to the artists' fans.

YouTube, which is owned by search giant Google, had more than 100
million users in December, according to data from comScore, a Web
audience measurement service.

YouTube's music video licenses with Vivendi's Universal Music Group,
the world's largest music company, and privately held EMI Music are
still running. But renewal talks with the two companies are coming up

Toshiba Proclaims FeRAM Breakthrough

Toshiba Corp. this week announced the prototype of a new FeRAM
(ferroelectric random access memory), which, according to the company,
redefines industry benchmarks for density and operating speed. The new
chip realizes storage of 128Mb (16MB) and read and write speeds of
1.6GB/s, the most advanced combination of performance and density yet
achieved.

FeRAM combines the relatively fast operating characteristics of DRAM
with flash memory's ability to retain data while powered off,
attributes that continue to attract the attention of the semiconductor
industry. No commercial devices are available, but many companies
explore the technology rather rigorously.

The new FeRAM modifies Toshiba's original chainFeRAM architecture,
which significantly contributes to chip scaling, with a new
architecture that prevents cell signal degradation, the usual tradeoff
from chip scaling. The combination realizes an upscaled FeRAM with a
density of 128Mb. Furthermore, a new circuit that predicts and
controls the fluctuations of power supply supports high-speed data
transfers. This allowed integration of DDR2 interface to maximize data
transfers at a high throughput at low power consumption, realizing
read and write speeds of 1.6GB/s. In developing the new FeRAM, Toshiba
broke its own record of 32Mb density and 200Mb data transfers, pushing
performance to eight times faster than the transfer rate and density
of the previous records and the fastest speed of any non-volatile RAM.

ChainFeRAM in the earlier generation of 64-megabit FeRAM employed a
data-line design in which neighboring data-lines operated in sequence:
one is off when the other is on. This allowed off lines to provide a
noise barrier between on lines, contributing to chip scaling and fine
performance. Previous chain architecture collected four data-lines but
Toshiba has successfully increased the number of data-lines to eight,
which led to a decrease in the total chip area.

Secretive Sony Ericsson Shows 12.1-megapixel

Sony Ericsson is working on a touchscreen phone with a 12.1-megapixel
camera it announced on Sunday, but details on the upcoming Idou device
was scarce.

The company did say that the Idou will come equipped with a 3.5-inch
touchscreen in the 16:9 format and a Xenon flash.

Just like when the Sony Ericsson launched the XPERIA X1, at Mobile
World Congress last year, it will take many months before the Idou -
which is only the concept name, according to Sony Ericsson - shows up
in shops. The phone will start selling during the second half of 2009.

Sony Ericsson, according to Ben Wood, analyst at CCS Insight. It also
gives competitors like Samsung the opportunity to launch and start

collaboration around mobile Internet devices (MIDs) based on Intel's
next-generation MID hardware platform, codenamed "Moorestown," and
Linux-based Moblin v2.0 software platform. The LG device is expected
to be one of the first Moorestown designs to market.

LG and Intel's common goal is to unleash rich Internet experiences
across a range of mobile devices while delivering the functionality of
today's high-end smart phones. The collaboration on the new design
extends a close working relationship the two companies have enjoyed

notebook, netbook and MID categories.

whole slew of smartphones. Unfortunately, Apple's iPhone isn't one of
them.

Adobe announced at the GSMA Mobile World Congress here Monday that
Flash Player 10, which is the full version of Flash that runs on PCs,
will be available on smartphones running Windows Mobile, Google's
Android, Nokia S60/Symbian, and the new Palm operating systems.
Devices with Flash Player 10 are expected to hit the market starting
in early 2010.

The company has worked for years on a lightweight incarnation of its
Flash technology for mobile phones. Adobe executives said that about
40 percent of all phones that are shipped today use this version of
its technology. But because Flash Lite doesn't allow for the same
functionality as what's available on the Flash 10 desktop version of
the technology, mobile users are missing out.

In November, Chief Technology Officer Kevin Lynch told attendees at
Adobe's Max conference in San Francisco that the company would bring
the full-fledged Flash Player 10 to smartphones.

alliance to dramatically increase the number of LG phones running
Windows. As part of the agreement, LG will make Windows its primary
operating system for its smartphones and will increase both the number

volume of Windows phones available from LG in 2009 and bring up to 26
new Windows phones to market in 2012 alone. Overall, the agreement can

The Nokia Ovi Store, announced at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2009,
will officially open for business in May, according to Nokia
officials. The N97, which will be released in June, will be the first
phone to have the store software preintegrated, but other Nokia phone

The Ovi Store is the first content and application store that
personalizes content according to a person's social connections and
physical location, or what Nokia calls 'Social Location'.

The Ovi Store provides developers with a dynamic opportunity to offer
Nokia's global consumer base new applications. Content providers will
be able to get their work into the store via a single channel,
Publish.Ovi.com, which will be open for content from February 16.

Also at the fair, Nokia said that its first model to ship with access
to the store would be its new flagship phone N97.

Office 14 crawls toward beta

up the Office 14 wave of products. Capossela wouldn't go into too many
specifics about when Office 14 would ship, but said Microsoft hoped
not to be too far beyond its typical cycle which sees new versions

Just because Office 14 won't be fully released until next year doesn't
mean consumers will have to wait that long to try out the products.

In an interview this week Senior Vice President Chris Capossela said
that Microsoft will offer more details on the beta "relatively soon,"
noting that Office has traditionally made its products available to
millions of testers well before the final version ships.

"That's been true of the suite," he said. "That will certainly be true
of the suite this time and of the Web apps."

With Office 14, Microsoft has said it will offer desktop versions of
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote as well as versions that can run
online in a browser, be it Internet Explorer, Safari, or Firefox. As
previously noted, that means that for the first time Office will also
work on both Linux and Apple's iPhone. CEO Steve Ballmer told

files in Windows 7, you don't need to install Apple's QuickTime.

The support for .mov files was mentioned deep in a long list of
changes that are coming to the Windows 7 Release Candidate.

On the Engineering Windows 7 blog, in a post entitled 'Some changes
since beta for the RC', Chaitanya Sareena, Senior Program Manager on
the Core User Experience team, talks up improved playback support for
video content from digital camcorders and cameras:

"We've since added support for Windows Media Player to natively
support the .mov files used to capture video for many common digital
cameras," writes Sareena.

While this may delight owners of cameras which output in the .mov
format, it's also good news for anyone who enjoys watching movies on
their PC, as movie trailers, particularly those on Apple Movie
Trailers, come in .mov format, and so require QuickTime (or a freeware
player such as VLC) to view.

Windows users who install QuickTime are then nagged with pop-ups from
the Apple update software prompting them to install other Apple
software such as iTunes and Safari.

And while this move brings wider camera support, and rids Windows
users of those annoying nag screens, it also has the added benefit for
Microsoft of making one Apple application less necessary to download.

instance, IBM is trying to persuade utilities and government agencies
to overhaul their computer networks and link digital sensors together
for better insights.

For example, instead of a meter-reader from the power company
traipsing through your backyard, IBM is banking that one day your
meter and your neighbors' will feed data directly into the utility's
computer network.

The company has been working on a project called SmartBay with an
Irish marine institute to develop sensors that are monitoring
pollution, marine life and wave conditions around Galway Bay and
transmitting data to researchers. Among the benefits, IBM contends, is
that computers can track floating debris that pose a hazard to
commercial fishermen.

This "smarter planet" theme is part of IBM's strategy to keep making
money in the recession. The company's chairman and CEO, Sam Palmisano,
said in a letter to shareholders this week that IBM will be aggressive
in drumming up business in areas like managing traffic, power grids,

Symbian sets schedule for OS road map

The Symbian Foundation committed itself to an aggressive operating
release schedule Friday, promising a new version of the open-source OS
every six months for the next several years.

Symbian is the world's most widely used smartphone operating system,
but it has been losing ground to rivals like Apple, Research in
Motion, and Microsoft in recent months. Last year Nokia, formerly
Symbian's largest shareholder, decided to revive its growth by
unifying the software and releasing it under an open-source license as
part of a foundation of companies.

That plan is rounding into shape, according to Symbian's David Wood.
The first unified release created under the Foundation, known as
Symbian^2, is expected to be "functionally complete" by the middle of
this year and "hardened" (debugged) by the end of the year, meaning
that devices bearing the new software could start to appear as the
year closes.

Symbian^3 is scheduled to reach functional completion around the same
time, with a hardened version on tap for the middle of 2010. That
means Symbian and its partners plan to make frequent updates to
software, which could make it much easier to react to changing trends
in how people use smartphones.

Apple TV to Get a Wii-Like Remote

Apple TV may get a Nintendo Wii-like remote control according to two
identical patent applications published yesterday. Referred to as a
"wand," in the patent application, the invention described suggests
Apple may look to expand Apple TV's capabilities into a full-fledged
entertainment system. Apple proposes a variety of uses for the wand
including "zoom operations, a keyboard application, an image
application, an illustration application, and a media application."
The patents were originally uncovered by Apple Insider.

At its most basic level the wand could be used to call up a dock, and
then to select an option from the menu by moving the wand across the
screen. The controller could also scroll through a CoverFlow display
and be used to manipulate photos by zooming in and out and rotating.
Other operations include using the wand as a digital pen and operating
Apple TV's on-screen keyboard.

Since Microsoft and Sony are encroaching on the core business of
iTunes and Apple TV, wouldn't it behoove Apple to consider returning
the favor? Apple's patent filing for the wand does refer to a video
game console once, but only as a cover-your-bases, just-in-case
attitude that many patent filings have. That suggests Apple is not
ruling anything out, but I doubt the company would consider gaming too
seriously.

The other problem is that Apple has never been one for game
development and may already be too far behind in this area to catch
up. However, as content streaming and download offerings expand, Apple
TV may never truly be able to compete with consoles that play games,
view movies and photos, play DVDs and Blu Ray discs, and access the
Internet. At the moment, Apple TV can only do a small portion of these
things.

There's also the issue of whether the Apple wand infringes on any of
Nintendo's patents for the Wiimote. Apple recently claimed it was
going to be aggressive about protecting its own patents, and I would
expect Nintendo to feel the same way. It's too early to say what will
happen at this point, as the patent filing only points to a concept.
It's entirely possible that Apple may decide the wand doesn't do what
they want for the Apple TV or it could end up with an entirely
different device. The wand patent does indicate, however, that Apple
is thinking about Apple TV's future.

Manifold.net today announced a new world record for the number of
processors used in a personal computer for Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) processing. At the company's 2009 European User Meeting
in London, Manifold demonstrated an upcoming new software product that
simultaneously utilized over 1440 processor cores to perform a remote
sensing image computation at supercomputer speed with over 3.5
teraflops of performance. Manifold demonstrated the new software on a
desktop 64-bit Windows PC equipped with three NVIDIA GTX 295 GPU cards
costing less than $500 each.

The demonstration showed how a desktop Windows PC using inexpensive
consumer components and running a $245 Manifold GIS package can run
over one hundred times faster than any other GIS or remote sensing
software package, even those costing tens of thousands of dollars more
than Manifold.

"Modern technology provides significantly lower cost as well as much
greater performance," commented Dimitri Rotow, a product manager at
Manifold. He continued, "The desktop supercomputer technology we

Facebook with iPhone applications

Facebook is letting users of its flourishing social-networking
community play together on the road by using Apple's popular iPhone
and iPod Touch mobile devices.

Facebook senior platform manager Dave Morin revealed the news Saturday
while flanked by an array of hip social software makers at a panel
talk at South By Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Festival in Austin,
Texas.

"For the first time, your iPhone apps can now have friends," Morin
said before panelists demonstrated applications that expand the
borders of Facebook's online community onto iPhones and iPod Touch
devices.

Facebook Connect for the iPhone debuted with nine applications
available at Apple's online iTunes store and a promise that more will
launch in coming days.

Mini software programs tailored to mesh with the Facebook operating
platform let social-networking service users play games with each
other online, share restaurant reviews while on the move, and locate
friends.

Facebook members can use the community-oriented applications through
iPhones as they would if they were connecting through a home computer.

Phone banking service for 21 African and Middle East

South African mobile phone operator MTN on Monday said it was
launching a banking service on mobile phones in 21 African and Middle
East countries where access to traditional banks is poor.

"We have launched this service in South Africa in 2005," Dare Okoudjou
of MTN's mobile phone banking department told AFP.

"But it wasn't a full bank account with the mobile phone at the
primary access, it was very focused on key basic services, such as
money transfer," he said of the South African service.

Now MTN is planning to offer a fully-fledged bank account on mobile
phones called MTN MobileMoney which will allow users to pay for
purchases or check balances. A credit card will be optional.

MTN calls the service "a convenient, secure and affordable way for MTN
subscribers to send money, buy airtime and pay bills using their
cellphone".

The service will be extended to the other 20 countries where MTN
operates including Uganda, Nigeria, Cameroon and Ivory Coast which
have a combined 90 million mobile phone users.

MTN said it signed a 9.7-million-dollar (7.5-million-euro) deal with
Fundamo, a South African-based specialist provider of enterprise
mobile financial services software.
